Virginia Avenue UMC Altar Guild
Virginia Avenue United Methodist Women

The responsibilities and activities of the Altar Guild do not vary much from year to year.  Our main objective is to take care of our Altar, making sure that the altar cloths are the correct colors, taking care of weekly flower arrangements, preparing communion each month, and keeping fresh candles in place.

Each holiday brings a minor alteration to the altar (no pun intended), but these typically remain the same from one year to the next.

We currently have only 9 members, as we have lost several in the past few years.  Four of our senior members, who passed their valuable knowledge on to the rest of us, dedicated countless years to caring for our alter and didn't resign until they were no longer physically able to carry out the needed tasks.  Each member is assigned a month in which we take care of the altar and host a meeting in which we discuss upcoming events and business.

To cover the costs of altar necessities including flowers, candles, cloths, etc., monthly dues are collected from members and an annual fundraiser is held.  For years, that fundraiser was a spring bake sale, but this year, we sold breakfast at the UMW's rummage sale, instead.

Our congregation participates by providing flowers for the altar throughout the year.  There are two other changes we have made in the past year or two.  One is the use of a wooden stand which is shaped like a Christmas tree and placed in front of the altar rail to display poinsettias and Easter lilies during their respective holidays.  This was a tradition from long ago that we were excited to bring back. And, after many years of collecting used altar candles, we figured out a way to use PVC piping to make new candles.  This could save us a bundle, as these candles are very expensive.

We are currently looking forward to our annual picnic in July, which is a time for fellowship, socializing and sharing of good food.

It is an honor and a privilege to participate in the care of our beautiful sanctuary that reflects the beauty and glory of our creator.

Food Pantry

Volunteers meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock in the Fellowship Hall to set up tables, fill the bags with food, and seperate the types of bread, vegetables and fruits.

On the 1st and 3rd Wednesday afternoons, volunteers from Virginia Avenue and other churches from the area staff and man the Food Pantry Program at United Methodist Church from 2 pm to 4 pm. The Food pantry serves both the Tennessee and Virginia residents.

This program was started in 1993 by Rev. Charles Dilks and has continued to this day. Today, a couple continues the Food Pantry for over 15 years together and they make sure that adequate food is available for those who need it. The food is received from Haven of Rest, Second Harvest, and various businesses and households.

To be served you MUST bring some form identification indicating who you say you are and where you live. This is necessary to comply with government regulations and record keeping.

If you or someone you know needs food, please direct them to Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church.

Any donations are welcome!
